Stirling Castle

During a long and bloody history Stirling Castle has been attacked or besieged at least 16 times. Three battles have been fought in its immediate vicinity, two of which were turning points in Scottish history. In the famous "Battle of Stirling Bridge" the Scottish patriot William Wallace lead his compatriots to a great victory against the English in the late 13th century. Just a few years later under the command of King Robert the Bruce the Scottish amry could win their independance in the "Battle of Bannockburn".

A number of Scottish Kings and Queens have been baptised, or crowned, or died within or near Stirling Castle. At least one King was murdered nearby: while another committed murder within its walls.

The Castle is in the care of Historic Scotland and is open to the public all year round and seven days a week. With its exhibitions of the Scottish Regement, a 16th century kitchen and a weaving mill, the Castle is the most popular place to visit in Stirling.

Stirling Old Town Jail

Located right next to the hostel the Old Town Jail is open for visitors all year. What was prison life like 150 years ago? The wardens, the hangman and the inmates can tell you stories about bygone times. Explore the jail yourself or take part in the Prison Tours, Prison Beastie Hunt (for children) and enjoy a stunning view from the jail's tower. Audio tours in 5 languages are also available.

The Walace Monument

Right in frot of the Ochil Hills towers the impressive National Wallace Monument into the sky. It is the place where William Wallace the greatest hero of Scotland's war of independence becomes alive. Come and discover the Hall of Heroes and see William Wallace's original famous battle sword. Take a break in the Coffee Shop and enjoy a picturesque view over Stirling and the Ochil Hills. The monument can easily be reached by busses from Stirling's city centre or by foot.
